The Web Vibration API allows websites to interact with your mobile device's vibration hardware, if it exists. Imagine it as a way for webpages to give your phone a little nudge or buzz. This can be used for various purposes:

  • Notifications: Instead of annoying pop-ups, websites can subtly vibrate your phone to grab your attention for important messages or updates.
  • Feedback: Feel a confirmation pulse after completing a form or a satisfying buzz for a correct answer on a learning platform.
  • Immersion: Web games can leverage vibrations for haptic feedback, simulating actions like in-game hits or button presses.
  • Accessibility: Vibrations can subtly guide visually impaired users through interactive elements, providing non-visual cues.
  • Interactive storytelling: Enhance the narrative by making you feel the tension rise with each plot twist or the rumble of a spaceship engine as you explore a spacefaring website.

The API itself is quite simple. It uses the Navigator.vibrate() method, which accepts a vibration pattern. This pattern can be a single number representing the duration of a single vibration, or an array of numbers that alternate between vibration and pause durations. Websites can't control the strength of the vibration – that depends on your device.

Overall, the Web Vibration API adds a new layer of interactivity to web experiences on mobile devices. It's not a flashy feature, but its subtle nudges can enhance user engagement, improve accessibility, and create more immersive web experiences.
