Last week, I was complaining to a coworker about how difficult it was for folks to explore a demo app I had built for KendoReact, since I didn’t have it hosted anywhere. I was debating whether to go through all the hoops of buying a domain name and everything when he asked: “Why not just use Github Pages?”
Huh. Well, yeah…why not! In a matter of hours, my demo app was hosted at https://kathryngraysonnanz.github.io/kendo-demo/ !
It had totally slipped my mind, but it’s actually the perfect solution! Github Pages allows you to host a project directly from your Github account, quickly and easily. Since I already had my repo set up on Github, I was halfway there…but, as I discovered, there were a few things I needed to tweak in my React app in order for everything to run smoothly. Since I had to do a bit of Googling to muddle my way through it, I figured I’d document everything here for anyone else with an existing Create React App project in a Github repo that they’d like to publish using Github Pages.
Steps
Pre-requisite: This guide is assuming you already have a React project (using Create React App) in a Github repo. If you don’t, take a look at these guides for using Create React App to spin up a new React project and then pushing that project into a new Github repo.
1. Check out the Github Pages settings
Open up your Github repo and navigate to Settings > Pages.
This is going to be your home base for managing the hosting of your project. One of the first things it asks you is for a Source – where do you want Github Pages to look for your files?
This is a deceptively straightforward question, since Github Pages is actually quite opinionated and won’t allow you to set a subfolder as your source. Once you’ve chosen a branch, your only folder options are /(root)
and /docs
. This is our first roadblock, since the CRA file structure puts all your HTML files and resources (like the favicon and manifest.json
file) into the /public
subfolder. In an ideal world, we’d just be able to point Github Pages to /public
and call it a day…but, unfortunately, we can’t.
Luckily for you, I went down some (incorrect) rabbit holes first, so you don’t have to. First, I tried to see if there was a way to force Github Pages to read from a different subfolder (there isn’t), then whether if it’s worth just renaming your /public
folder to /docs
(it isn’t).
Eventually, I found the real answer – in the CRA docs. Their recommended solution is the gh-pages
library, so that’s what I used!
2. Install gh-pages
In your terminal, run npm install --save gh-pages
to add gh-pages
to your project.
gh-pages
gets around the subfolder situation by moving your publish files to a separate branch, which then allows you to point your Github Pages source at the /(root)
for that branch, without disrupting your main branch.
It will create a branch named gh-pages
and (after a few steps that I’ll go through in the next section) automatically update that branch with new files whenever you run npm run deploy

3. Set your “homepage” and update your build scripts
Open your package.json
file and do the following:
- Add the following line, making sure to replace the example URL with your Github Pages URL:
"homepage":"https://myusername.github.io/my-app)",
NOTE: If you’re not sure of your Github Pages URL, it’s your Github username (in place of “myusername”) and your repo name (in place of “my-app”).
- Add the following lines to the very beginning of your
"scripts"
section:"predeploy": "npm run build", "deploy": "gh-pages -d build",
NOTE: Because the scripts run in order, it’s important that these lines are in this order, before the "start"
script.
The "homepage"
option tells CRA how to determine the root URL in the final HTML file, and the new scripts handle creating the build files and getting everything over into that new gh-pages
branch it created for just this purpose.
4. Update your Github Pages source and test
Run npm-run-deploy
in your terminal, then push everything up.
Return to the Github Pages settings and set your source to the gh-pages
branch.
Wait a few minutes, then check your URL!
Go ahead and push everything up, if you haven't already, and deploy. Check in Github to make sure that the gh-pages
branch update! Now, when you return to the Github Pages settings, you should be able to select gh-pages
as your source branch.
At this point, you should be able to see something happening on your Github Pages URL – even if it’s not fully working just yet, it shouldn’t be the 404 error anymore. In my case, I had a blank screen at this stage, which meant a little more troubleshooting.
If your app is working at this point: hooray – you’re good to go!
However, if (like me) things are still not quite right, see if either of the following steps fix it:
1. Updating your relative links
In your terminal, update PUBLIC_URL
to match your repo name by running export PUBLIC_URL="/your-repo"
(replacing “your-repo” with your actual repo name).
In my case, I was getting a completely blank, pure white page – this was a red flag to me, since the background color of my app was black. That meant this probably wasn’t a React or JS problem – my CSS wasn’t even getting loaded! However, when I ran my app locally, everything looked good.
A little Google brought me to this page, which helped me identify the issue: root-relative links.
And sure enough, when I inspected the page I found that the app was loading at https://kathryngraysonnanz.github.io/kendo-demo/
but all the resource links in my index.html
file were just /favicon.ico
(or whatever), which meant they were resolving to https://kathryngraysonnanz.github.io/favicon.ico
...and returning 404s. So something wasn’t getting bundled correctly.
The blog said that Create React App would extract the path location from the homepage
settings and update the PUBLIC_URL
variable, but for whatever reason…that just wasn’t happening for me. So, I updated it manually.
By running export PUBLIC_URL="/kendo-demo"
in the terminal, I was able to set that variable by hand and get those links generating correctly.
2. Updating your React Router setup
Add a basename
to your parent <Router>
element, setting basename
to the name of your repo – like so: <Router basename="/my-repo">
The other thing about having this funky URL is that it will mess up any routing you set up beforehand. That means that if you’re using React Router, you’ll need to make a little tweak.
In my case, I had a page at src/app/router/index.js
where I was using React Router to handle all my URLs. My setup looked like this:

Thankfully, the fix was easy! All you need to do is add a basename
to your parent <Router>
element with your repo name, which will adjust your links if you’re serving from a sub-directory. That way, it matches your Github Pages URL. I updated mine to be <Router basename="/kendo-demo">
, and that fixed my routing issues!
Get your app out there!
I hope this was a helpful guide to getting everything up and running with Github Pages – plus, a little troubleshooting, if you run into the same issues that I did. All things considered, even with the bumps in the road that I ran into, I was able to get my app regularly and successfully deploying in about 2 hours – still pretty quick!
