Constantly remake yourself
Your ego is a huge block. The best way to suck at coding and be archaic is to be a "know-it-all". The growth rate in software engineering is insanely for the past few decades is insanely exponential. In order to stay relevant, you need to constantly reinvent yourself. Learn every new that comes up!
Take your time but be the hardest working individual
Learn a thing at a time. A greater percentage of developers who do not make it to their potentials are those who are always intimidated by the media or news. Pick a thing, learn it until you can explain to a 5 y/o until you move to the next. Work hard and stay hungry.
Make connections and learn from the best
"Birds of the same feather flock together" they say. To be classed as the best, you need to have been with the best. Never hesitate to join and grow with a community of passionate developers. Engage in hackathons, apply for jobs slightly out of your league. Challenge yourself!
Basic Principles First
