For a light linux desktop, how does XFCE fare against MATE?

I'm going to experiment with a new distro and I'm unable to decide between Xubuntu and Ubuntu-MATE.

My criteria:

Speed and performance.
stability.
configurable (easy to change themes, backgrounds, fonts, etc.)
Should run without problems on a 4GB RAM/i3 laptop.

Which one do you think is better and why?
