A Bankart Repair is a procedure designed to prevent recurring anterior shoulder dislocations caused by instability in the front of the shoulder. This injury occurs when the shoulder is dislocated, causing damage to the anterior glenoid labrum—a thick band of cartilage that lines the socket of the shoulder joint. When torn or stretched, a pocket forms at the front of the glenoid, allowing the humeral head to slip out of the socket.

If you suffer from a Bankart injury, your shoulder surgeon may perform a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure to repair the damaged labrum. In severe cases, or if the shoulder continues to dislocate despite surgery, a more extensive open procedure may be recommended.
