From giving up to Dedication: My Coding Journey

Grëg Häris - Sep 4 - - Dev Community

For as long as I can remember, I've dreamed of becoming a software developer.

My heroes have always been programmers who created incredible software.

I've read about them and watched movies or documentaries about their lives.

I remember the motivation and excitement I felt after watching "The Social Network" - the movie about the creation of Facebook. I just wanted to grab a laptop and start building the next big thing.

So in 2021, I got my first laptop and began coding.

I was thrilled to start, but after realizing how challenging it was, I quit. However, from time to time, I'd get a burst of motivation to try again.

I struggled with self-doubt and procrastination, often thinking I wasn't intelligent enough.

Imagine how far I could have come if I had persevered.

Now, I've decided to fully commit. Learning to program has become the central focus of my existence each day, and I've aligned my goals and ambitions toward it. It's the most important thing in my life right now.

Here are three strategies that have helped me stay focused:

  • Daily Challenges: I set daily coding challenges for myself, such as lessons or projects to complete. These small victories each day keep me motivated.
  • Structured Learning: Instead of waiting for motivation to strike, I maintain a consistent study schedule. This not only ensures that I dedicate sufficient time to learning but also enhances my consistency, as I know these times are specifically for studying.
  • Journaling - Reflection and Analysis: I begin and end each day by journaling. In the morning, I set my priorities, and then I reflect on my efforts toward them before sleeping each night. This practice has helped me track my progress, identify areas for improvement, and stay accountable.
